In the end of February 2019, Helen Needham from BBC Radio Scotland joined us on Fire & Peace’s first official ‘Recovery with Nature’ trip. The results of this trip can be heard on ‘Out of Doors’, which was broadcast on the 6th April 2019.
The ‘Recovery with Nature’ programme is aimed at people who are in various stages of addiction recovery, with the intention of giving them the opportunity to reconnect with nature and escape the “concrete jungle”. Helen joined us for the overnight camp in Inshriach, on the banks of the Spey in the Highlands, and talked with the campers and organisers to get an idea of what the trips are about and what we’re trying to achieve.
She discussed the idea of how getting away from the urban environment and immersing oneself in nature can be hugely beneficial: the peace and serenity of the location inspiring the campers to relax and open up. Helen also observed the powers of the campfire – the heart of any camp. The fire accepts anyone, and doesn’t judge, which allows the participants to communicate more freely, perhaps talking more openly than they would in the boxy confines of a room.
At the end of the camp one word resounded with us all: connectedness. The connection we made with each other, and the connection we all made with Mother Nature, a truly positive and inspiring force.
